Frequently Asked Questions

What is EmuELEC? The RG351 runs EmuELEC, a Linux distribution designed explicitly to emulate games. It is composed of two core components: RetroArch and EmulationStation.
What is RetroArch? RetroArch forms the backbone of the system. It is a front-end for a collection of emulators that enables an "all-in-one" experience, allowing you to switch between emulators, adjust configurations, and enabling online play for classic games.
What is EmulationStation? EmulationStation is a visually customizable, streamlined, user-friendly front-end. It allows you to change themes, scrape boxart for games, and sort games into collections. On the RG351, it acts as the primary GUI for selecting games.
How do I navigate the UI? Use the **analogue stick** or **directional pad** to move around, and the **A button** or **B button** to select items and exit menus respectively. Press the **START button** to open the main menu for UI, Network, and System settings.
How do I exit games? The method varies depending on the emulator:
  • RetroArch Cores (Standard): Press both analog sticks (L3 + R3) simultaneously to bring up the Quick Menu. Press B, scroll to Quit RetroArch, and press A.
  • Nintendo DS (DraStic): Press the left analog stick. Use the D-Pad to select Exit DraStic and press B.
  • Arcade (MAME): Press the right analog stick to immediately exit.
  • PlayStation Portable (PPSSPP): Press the right analog stick, highlight Exit to menu, then Exit, pressing B for each.
How do I use Network Play (Netplay)? Netplay allows you to play retro games online by simulating same-system multiplayer.
  1. Connect to Wi-Fi: Press START, go to Network Settings, and enter your Wi-Fi SSID and Wi-Fi Key.
  2. Hosting: In the RetroArch Quick Menu, navigate to the Netplay section (headset icon). Select Host, enable Publicly Announce Netplay, and then Start Netplay Host.
  3. Joining: In the Netplay section, select Refresh Netplay Host List, find the matching room, and select it to join.
What are "Cores"? Cores are the individual emulator engines used by RetroArch. Different cores might offer better performance or higher accuracy for the same system (e.g., Mupen64Plus vs ParaLLElN64 for N64).
How do I change default cores/emulators? Press the **Start Button** in EmulationStation, select **Games Settings**, then **Per System Advanced Configuration**. Select the system you want to change, and use the left/right directional inputs to choose a different emulator/core.
l pad** or **analog stick** to select the emulator you wish to use.

Once set, the next time you launch a game for that system, it will use the selected emulator.
