Display Technology

Display choice is a key differentiator across handheld gaming devices. Panel type, resolution, refresh rate, and aspect ratio all influence the gaming experience.

Panel Types

AMOLED / OLED

Best colors, deepest blacks, highest contrast. Found on premium devices:

IPS

Vibrant colors, wide viewing angles, high quality without the OLED premium:

LCD

Budget-friendly, functional. Found on entry-level devices:

LTPS

A specialized panel type suited for pixel-perfect retro upscaling:

  • AYANEO Pocket VERT — LTPS display, chosen specifically for clean integer scaling of retro content

Resolution Range

Resolutions across reviewed devices span from compact to high-density:

Higher resolution is not always better on small screens — it demands more GPU power and can reduce battery life without visible benefit at handheld viewing distances.

Refresh Rate

  • 60Hz — standard, found on most devices (e.g., AYANEO Pocket S2)
  • 120Hz — mid-tier upgrade for smoother gameplay
  • 144HzKONKR Pocket FIT
  • 165Hz — highest seen in reviewed devices

Higher Hz vs Better Panel

A key tradeoff exists between refresh rate and panel quality. The KONKR Pocket FIT offers 144Hz on an LCD panel, while the AYANEO Pocket S2 runs at 60Hz on a higher-quality IPS panel. For many users, the better colors and contrast of a superior panel outweigh the smoothness advantage of a higher refresh rate.

Aspect Ratios

  • 16:9 — standard widescreen, most common across the lineup
  • 4:3Anbernic RG Slide, ideal for retro content (NES, SNES, GBA, PS1) which was designed for 4:3 displays
  • 3:2 verticalAYANEO Pocket VERT, providing 10x the resolution of the original Game Boy screen. Excellent for vertical-oriented retro games.
